How to Get Ahead in the Business World

How to Get Ahead in the Business World | Business | Converge

Some people know that they want to work in the business world from an early age. They can understand that this is where people make moves, where change happens, where the future of the world is shaped. And then there’s the whole matter of being able to make a lot of cash. It’s not difficult to see the appeal of working in this world. But here’s the thing: by its very nature, the business world is competitive. That’s what makes it exciting. As such, it can be difficult to get ahead, especially when there are so many other people who want to get ahead too. That’s why it’s important that you know a few of the tried and tested ways to advance through the ranks. We take a look at five such tips below.

Work in a Reputable Company

It’s not just what you know, it’s who you know, and, increasingly, who you work for. If you want to eventually end up in the upper echelons of the business world, then it’s important that you don’t waste too much time working for a company that’s not going to help you in the long-term. Now, when we say it’s better to work in a reputable company, that doesn’t necessarily mean ‘large’; indeed, in some cases this is not the right approach, since new employees aren’t given many responsibilities. Working in a startup, by contrast, is a good approach — providing it’s obvious that the players involved in the company are going places. There’s much to be said for surrounding yourself with the best. Being able to differentiate the real deal from the ones who are all talk as early as possible will serve you well in your career.

The Art of Conversation

What is success in business, anyway? It’s such a slippery term and idea. You could say that it’s possessing the ability to come up with new ideas, innovate, analyze, and so on. And without a doubt, these functions do play important roles. But the thing that underpins all success is the ability to simply talk with others. We mentioned earlier that it’s not only what you know, but you know. When an exciting opportunity becomes available in a person’s business, they’re more likely to hire someone with whom they’ve had positive dealings with in the past; someone they can talk with; someone they can trust. These can only happen if you know how to talk, and aren’t afraid of simply getting involved with a conversation.

Learning More

But of course, knowing people is only the starting point. Being the best talker in the world will not make up for a lack of talent. One of the best ways to make yourself liable for a promotion is to ensure that you’re indispensable to the company. And for that, education and an understanding of the inner workings of the company is essential, as well as a broader understanding of the business world and how it operates. To stand out from the crowd (who will all have a Bachelor’s degree), it’s worthwhile pursuing a Master’s in a business related subject, such as those available from Northeastern University. Studies have shown that the higher up the education chain you go, the higher up in the business world you go, too — with the corresponding increase in salary.

Find a Mentor

The thing about diving into the business world is that you have to learn on the job. Even if you’re a fast learner, you could end up taking longer than you would have liked to figure out something that caused you to make a misstep in your career. That’s why it’s a good idea to look at getting a mentor. They’ll have already navigated the business world, and will have learned a lot of invaluable lessons along the way. While you don’t always need to take their advice, there’s much to be said for having access to a brilliant mind! Identify someone that you admire, and look at approaching them about becoming your mentor.

Taking Care Of Yourself

The business world is tough. There’s no point in pretending otherwise. As such, if you want to get ahead, it’s important that you look at treating it for what it is — a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t break your neck trying to get ahead. Look after yourself, exercise, eat well, and play the long game. You’ll find it much easier to deliver the caliber of work need to get ahead if your body and mind are sharp.
