5 Tried and Tested Skin Care Tips to Get You Through Winter
Winter comes around eventually and, if you’re anything like me, you know that it can wreak havoc with your skin. The chapped lips, the dry skin, the red spots and blemishes…when your skin is bad, it can really knock your confidence. So, to help you avoid the struggle of winter skin, I have put together a list of my top tips.
1. Keep Hydrated to Avoid Dry Skin
Did you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? And if it’s not kept well hydrated, spots of dryness, dark under-eyes, and large pores can start appearing. During the winter this problem can be made worse. In fact, our skin is actually the barrier that keeps water from the inside of our bodies. So, if it’s dry or very cold outside, water can evaporate off your skin much faster.
To prevent dehydration during the winter, you have to drink plenty of water. You should be drinking at least 8 cups of water every day. However, if you notice that you are still suffering with dry skin, try using a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers are a great way to add moisture back into your home and can help keep your skin hydrated, even during the coldest months.
2. Moisturise Your Skin Regularly
Keeping your skin properly moisturised is never more important than during the winter months. And if you want your skin to stay moisturised for longer, apply your moisturiser to damp skin. This will seal the moisture in for longer and prevent your skin from drying out when exposed to the cold weather.
It is important to note that some over-the-counter moisturisers have ingredients that are petroleum-based and, therefore, can actually end up drying out your skin further. So, be sure to choose a water-based moisturiser as it is more likely to protect your skin and prevent dryness.
3. Exfoliate Often
During the winter, dry areas on the face, hands, and feet tend to get itchy and uncomfortable. And sometimes there are so many dead skin cells that simply applying moisturiser isn’t enough. In this instance, it is important to exfoliate the skin often. Exfoliate gently, using either an exfoliating brush or a face wash with exfoliating salt flakes or grains in it (avoid micro-plastics as these are polluting).
Once you have exfoliated the dead skin away, it is important to apply a moisturiser to replenish the new skin cells. Exfoliating in the winter is important as it helps encourage your skin to stay healthy and smooth.
4. Avoid Irritating Materials and Allergens
Did you know that during the winter your skin is extra sensitive? If you suffer with eczema, dermatitis, or there are certain foods or materials that cause your skin to flare up, it is best to avoid these triggers. Be careful to look after your sensitive skin by avoiding chemical-laden detergents, irritating materials and fabrics like wool, and dairy products (a common trigger food for people with eczema).
5. Nourish Your Skin with DIY Masks
Self-care is extremely important every day of the year, but your skin requires extra attention during the harsh winter months. One of the best ways to treat your skin in the cold whether is with hydrating homemade face masks.
Hydrating masks include moisturising ingredients like olive oil, avocado, oats, and honey. Mix what you like together to create a creamy paste, apply to the skin, and leave for 10-30 minutes of pure hydration. Wash off and finish with a gentle moisturiser – your skin with thank you for it!
