Did you know that there are seven different types of dental practitioner?
Strange isn’t it? Why are there so many?
While most people are familiar with the different types of medical professionals one may find at a GP practice, many dental patients assume that there are only 2 different types of dental professional; general and orthodontic.
Many dental patients typically see one family-based practitioner twice a year for routine check-ups but, depending on clinical presentations and secondary conditions, a patient may require the help of all seven types to get their oral hygiene back on track!
Why is it important to know the difference? Because we all like to know who is helping us maintain good overall health; not many people when pressed could list an endodontist’s responsibilities and as humans tend to fear the unknown, it is always best to know the job description of every dentist in Soho before meeting them.
The general dentist
Like the GP at a doctor’s surgery, this practitioner is the first port of call for most dental issues and is the most commonly seen of all the dental professionals.
They perform routine check-ups, take X-rays and can perform dental cleanings and tooth whitening.
Endodontist
Sounds scary but an endodontist’s role in maintaining oral health is pretty awesome!
When someone has a dental infection and requires a root canal, this is the dentist in Soho that will perform it and will usually do the follow up; very useful in a dental emergency!
Orthodontist
Most people know the role of the orthodontist – it’s just about fitting braces right?
Not really. An orthodontist does fit braces but that is only one of their jobs; they can help correct misaligned jaws, help with correcting issues with facial structure and design custom-made mouthguards and aligners, like Invisalign.
Pedodontist
This practitioner specialises in children’s teeth.
While it is assumed that children’s teeth are just smaller than adults, this is not the case. Children’s enamel tends to be weaker than adults’, making them more prone to decay and secondary issues. A pedodontist applies fluoride sealants and performs thorough cleaning of the teeth, while also educating children on how to maintain good oral health.
Pathologist
Useful if there is an abnormal growth or discolouration of the gums, a pathologist is trained in how to identify many of the diseases and conditions that can affect the mouth.
They are also trained in spotting diseases in the jawbone, lips, cheeks and tonsils. A referral is required for an examination with a pathologist.
Surgeon
Need a tooth pulled?
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons can also perform reconstructive surgeries, biopsies, oral tissue extractions alongside helping patients suffering from snoring and sleep apnea; very useful if your partner is a snorer!
Periodontist
Last but certainly not least, the periodontist is a specialist in gum diseases or conditions.
Their expertise is also required when having dental implants fitted alongside creating treatment plans for patients with gingivitis and other gum issues. They also help identify and treat gum sensitivity.
