The BBC recently reported that orthodontists have seen as much as a seventy-five per cent increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment.
This same report identified that the majority of these patients were between twenty-six and fifty years of age.
Women appeared to be the most prominent section of society, however more and more men are also seeking treatment.
This highlights the fact that patients are becoming increasingly aware of their facial appearance, especially their teeth.
The latest dental science and technological advances, not only in dentistry but in all aspects of our lives, have made us realize that almost anything is possible.
Now braces Windsor are no longer the preserve of young children as adults realize the benefits of correcting their oral imperfections.
A plethora of corrective treatments
Orthodontists today are able to offer a variety of dental treatments to correct many dental and facial imperfections caused by misaligned jaws and teeth.
Conditions such as crooked, gapped or overcrowded teeth need no longer be something that a patient has to endure.
Other conditions such as overbites, underbites or protruding teeth can all also be treated.
The evolution of braces
Remember those children years ago who had to wear what looked like dental scaffolding?
They probably have lovely straight teeth now, but those braces looked uncomfortable.
How things have changed and even traditional braces have undergone a transformation.
Better design and materials have resulted in a far more comfortable and effective appliance.
This new version of the traditional dental brace is extremely efficient in treating even the most severe misalignment conditions.
Other types of braces
The use of other materials has resulted in the development of ceramic brackets in place of metal brackets and these can be either clear or the colour of a patient’s teeth.
Even the wires used are available in an off-white shade making them more discreet.
Ceramic braces are also referred to as clear braces and they are also normally more comfortable than the conventional metal braces.
Lingual braces have also become more popular because they are fitted to the back of the teeth and are therefore not visible.
So if a patient feels that ceramic braces are not discreet enough these braces offer a very good alternative.
Heed the orthodontist’s advice
It is always important to remember that the primary benefit of correcting dental misalignments is a healthier mouth and consequently a healthier body.
Having misaligned teeth can result in many health conditions.
Tooth and gum disease resulting in bad breath are just the oral conditions that can occur and could be the precursor to far more serious health conditions.
Persistent headaches and even heart disease can be caused by harmful mouth bacteria which gets into the bloodstream causing heart valve complications.
Deciding on the appropriate treatment needs to be discussed in depth and while the result is to achieve straight, healthy teeth the process to get there must be carefully considered.
The correct braces for the relevant condition is something that an orthodontist is most qualified to advise on and the patient can only benefit from listening to and accepting this advice.
